Born December 2, 1927 in Morgan County, Alabama to Susie Cooper Reid and Ules Grady Reid. He was raised on a farm in Danville and from a very young age learned the virtue of hard work. While attending business college in Birmingham, he met his future bride and love of his life, Doris Hardy from Athens. Ules was baptized into Christ in 1950. He was a dedicated Bible student who read the entire Bible through many times, and continued to study it until his vision and physical problems interfered. His goal was to go to Heaven and stated so many times "if we miss Heaven, we have missed it all." Ules made music a big part of his life. He was able to play by ear any instrument he happened to pickup. He taught himself to play the bass fiddle and, for a time played in a blue grass band at Chapman Hollow. He loved church hymns the most and had a beautiful bass voice.
