Matthew Allen Russell, 96 of Athens, died Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Floyd E. Tut Vann State Veterans Home. 

Services will be 2pm Sunday at Spry Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Green officiating, burial in Limestone Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Visitation is from 12noon until service Sunday at Spry Funeral Home. 

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Woodward, Connor Woodward, Jonathan McCrary, Barry Jones, Jeff Abernathy and Gage Abernathy.

Mr. Russell was born October 11, 1922 in Limestone County, he was a member of Round Island Baptist Church, a World War II Army Veteran and he was a retired Baptist Minister.

Survivors: Son: Gene (Peggy) Russell of Athens, Grandchildren: Gina (Barry) Jones, Joy R. (Jimmy) Woodward, David Russell and Sandra (Jeff) Abernathy, Great Grandchildren: Jonathan McCrary, Jennifer Johnson, Gage Abernathy, Skye Abernathy, Maddi Woodward and Connor Woodward, Five Great Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews. Preceded in death by Wife: Florence L. Russell, Son: Thomas A. Russell.
