Current Obituaries
Peggy Ann Walker Belcher, 93, of Athens, AL passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
 
 

Mrs. Belcher was born October 21, 1929, in New Market, AL to Arthur King Walker and Bessie Nell Latham Walker. After graduating New Market High School and Florence State Teachers College, she began her elementary teaching career in 1951.  She taught 5th grade at Julian Newman Elementary School from its opening in 1964 until she retired in 1987.  Her passion for teaching led her to substitute until 78 years of age.  She enjoyed her students and teaching for over 50 years.
 
 

She was married to Coach Oba Belcher for 47 years.  A devoted coach’s wife, she was always seen in the stands cheering for his team. Together they rode the waves of excitement during his basketball seasons at Athens College. She also worked diligently in fundraising and Booster Club activities. She was the best mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt, always supporting her family in every venture as their favorite cheerleader.
 
 

Mrs. Belcher was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.  She had a true servant’s heart and it was shown in the many ways she served including teaching Sunday School, Training Union, and Vacation Bible School.  Her true passion was preparing meals and snacks for mission trips, Vacation Bible School, Connect Groups, and churchwide fellowships.  You were sure to have more than enough when Mrs. Belcher was in the kitchen.  
 
 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, siblings Jennie Marx, James, Robert, Joe, and Doc.   She is survived by one daughter, Leah Oakley and husband Ron, one son, Dewayne Bubba Belcher and wife Diane.  Four grandchildren Laura Smith and husband Jamie, Chris Oakley and wife Melody, Nathan Belcher and wife Jess, Thomas Belcher and wife Kristen.   Eight great grandchildren Walker Smith, Graham Oakley, Stella Oakley, Emmett Oakley, Addison Belcher, Katherine Belcher, August Belcher and Marigold Belcher.
 
 

Visitation will be Monday night from 6:00 -  8:00 at Emmanuel Baptist Church.  Service will be Tuesday at 11:00 at Emmanuel Baptist Church.  Burial to follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
 
 

Pallbearers: Chris Oakley, Nathan Belcher, Thomas Belcher, Jamie Smith, Harris Hurst, Vernon Hurst, Billy McClain.
 
Honorary Pallbearers:  Graham Oakley, Walker Smith, James Hurst, Jamey Hurst,
 
Tillman Hurst, Riley Hurst, Mac Hurst.
